O.M.U Golf Day
The Annual Old Muirite Golf Day was held on 5 November 2011. The event was held at the Uitenhage Golf Course.
Uitenhage Golf Club (UGC) is the 10th oldest club in South Africa being established in 1891 with 8 members on a 9 hole course hacked out the countryside in the now residential area of Van Riebeek Hoogte. The first inter club match in the Province took place between Port Elizabeth Golf Club and UGC on 24th May 1892. The result is not recorded but I’m sure UGC would have come out on top.
The club moved in 1901 to land adjacent to the Zwartkops River where it stayed for 49 years. The first clubhouse constructed in 1903 cost £125-00. The greens were of Kimberley Blue ground and were a considerable improvement over the old sand greens. In 1937 membership had risen to 166 and the club was on the look out for more land in order to expand. In 1950 the club moved to its current location, having a membership of 232. The new course was designed by a Dr. Murray of Cape Town.
June 1965 saw the first purified sewerage effluent being used on the course bringing huge improvements to playing conditions. 1966 saw the 75th anniversary of the club with an exhibition match between Harold Henning, Trevor Wilkes and 2 local Professionals in Wally Hyam and Alan Brookes. Various social functions were held in 1999, the Centenary year, culminating in a memorial service at the club to honour members who had pasted on
By 1981 membership stood at 429 and in 1985 the club embarked on a programme to improve the condition of course and greens with the introduction of bent grass greens. In 1994 major building took place with the creating of a new Pro Shop, Halfway House and sun deck of the main bar. This programme is ongoing and today we have a clubhouse and course of which the current members can be justly proud. We have a course that is op the best in the Province. Uitenhage is known as the garden town and the Uitenhage Golf Club is the jewel within that garden.
